How to become intellectually jacked
Reading more books won’t make you smarter. Retrieving what’s already in them will.
You close the book. It was good. It felt important while you were reading it. But if I asked you right now to tell me one thing you just learned, just one, you’d stutter.
You can’t rehearse a single point. You haven’t extracted anything. And the worst part: this has happened a hundred times. You blame your memory. You tell yourself you just have a bad memory. Some people can retain everything. You’re not one of them.
Here’s mine. I used to stutter every time someone asked me a question about something I’d just read. My sentences weren’t structured. I couldn’t explain a book, a topic, anything, without tripping over myself halfway through. I got so fed up with not being able to articulate my own thoughts that I started forcing myself to practice explaining things out loud, on purpose, before anyone else could ask and catch me failing. That’s the whole reason any of this exists. I wasn’t chasing a productivity hack. I was tired of sounding stupid.
I didn’t lack memory. I lacked understanding. I pivoted from “I’m not smart enough to retain this” to something simpler: I was never taught how.
What “intellectually jacked” actually means
I don’t mean trivia. I don’t mean IQ, which is mostly intellectual masturbation anyway, a number that makes you feel smart and does nothing for your actual life. I mean multidimensional: writing, articulating, debating, questioning, arguing, generating ideas, spotting patterns, thinking like a philosopher. A mind that can produce, not just store.
The lie the school system sold you
The school system installed the wrong operating system in all of us. It taught one thing: memorize, cram, test, forget. Everything was optimized for Friday’s quiz. And here’s what nobody tells you: when you memorize information, you’re not internalizing it. You’re not comprehending it. The true test of intelligence is understanding, and school never taught you how to do that.
Naval Ravikant put it better than I ever could.
“If you have to memorize something, then it wasn’t that important to begin with. If you understand it, you don’t have to memorize it.”
That’s the whole essay in one sentence. Everything below is just me proving it to you.
Let me show you what understanding actually looks like.
At the University of Oxford, after a lecture, students aren’t handed a test. They’re put into a tutoring group with a tutor. They debate. They question. They argue. They think critically about what they just learned. No paper, no exam, no multiple choice, just articulation under pressure. That single practice teaches more than any amount of rereading, cramming, or hours logged. The parts where you stutter become your curriculum.
Most people never experience this. Instead: cram more, put in more hours, grind to the bone, stay up past 2 a.m., read faster, listen to a thousand lectures. It’s almost funny: the person doing less is learning more than you.
The fluency illusion
This is the single biggest trick your brain plays on you. Familiarity feels like understanding. Recognition feels like recollection. You read a quote on X and think, “I know this. This is the one.” But if I asked you to explain it, to debate it, to define it, you couldn’t. You don’t actually know it. The idea is an acquaintance: a face you recognize, a name you can’t recall.
Try predicting what’s on the next page of a book before you turn it. You can’t. But once you see it, you think, “Oh yeah, I remember this.” That’s recognition, not memory. The page feels familiar because you just saw it. You never retrieved it. You never did the hard thing.
Here’s why rereading feels productive even though it’s nearly worthless: the words glide by, and you think “I know this.” But you’re only recognizing patterns someone else wrote. Your brain isn’t thinking about the content. It’s thinking about how many pages are left, whether you’re hungry, what’s next on your to-do list. Memory is the residue of thought. Spend five minutes trying to explain a chapter from memory, and your brain spends five minutes thinking about the content. That’s what sticks.
Slower is the fastest way
Everything you believe about learning is inverted. More hours doesn’t mean more learning. Faster doesn’t mean better. Feeling smart while studying is a warning sign, not a green light.
Here’s the story that proves it. Two students, same skill:
Enzo covered 20% of the course over 54 weeks: slow, deliberate, methodical. His score went from 62% to 92%.
Suresh covered 31% of the course in 5 weeks: fast, aggressive, ambitious. His score dropped from 80% to 71%.
Speed didn’t just fail to help Suresh. It reversed his progress. The fastest way to learn is to learn more slowly. Speed produces overload. Overload prevents habits from forming. The person rushing through ten techniques learns none of them. The person drilling one technique learns it permanently, then makes room for the next.
Here’s another one that shouldn’t make sense but does: to remember something, you must first forget it. Hermann Ebbinghaus discovered this in 1885. Within 20 minutes you lose 40% of new information, within a day about 70%. That’s not a bug. Practice while the memory is still fresh is easy and useless. Practice after it’s faded is hard and transformative. The signal for “keep this” is the effort of pulling it back. Forgetting isn’t the enemy. It’s the training partner.
Confusion is the only honest signal
Carnegie Mellon tested an adaptive learning system that got harder as students improved. Students hated it. They also learned twice as much. Neuroscience calls this the generation effect: the harder you work to produce the answer, the deeper it’s wired. Your brain doesn’t hate struggle. It hungers for it.
Certainty is the enemy of growth. When you’re certain, you stop asking questions. When you’re confused, you’re forced to search, connect, and reconstruct. The discomfort is the sensation of your brain building new pathways.
What actually works
Your brain can juggle about four ideas at once, no more. You cannot think through hard things entirely in your head. It’s too limiting. Externalize the thought onto a whiteboard or a page, and one idea connects to the next in seconds. I started whiteboarding “thinking on paper” once, and within minutes it connected to writing, testing, first drafts, embracing failure, and solving problems: a chain that would never have existed in my head. That’s why linear notes fail and mind mapping works: it exposes exactly where your thinking is messy.
The Oxford method applies the same principle socially. You have to defend an idea in real time. You can’t hide behind “I know it, I just can’t explain it.” When someone questions you and you stutter, that gap becomes your curriculum.
After you consume anything (a chapter, a video, a podcast), take five minutes, the same day, and ask yourself:
What did I learn today?
Where does this connect to what I already know?
How can I explain it simply?
What don’t I understand yet?
How would I teach this to a 12-year-old?
Five minutes of retrieval beats sixty minutes of rereading. Every time.
Starting is always the hardest part. Momentum is easier than ignition. Pull one idea out and it creates space for the next: one retrieved memory triggers another. Don’t wait for a full thesis. Start with one idea and let the avalanche build.
Why you won’t do this anyway
The techniques are simple. The barrier is identity.
People believe something new has to be perfect the first time. They try retrieval once or twice. It’s hard. It’s messy. They sound stupid. They quit. They haven’t accepted that looking dumb at first is the price of getting good.
Socrates asked questions so simple that people thought he was the fool. He was the one exposing what nobody actually understood. It’s better to look like a fool for a few seconds than to be a fool for life. Better to start messy than wait for the perfect first draft.
Remember Steve Jobs. He got fired from his own company at thirty and called it the best thing that ever happened to him. He got to start from scratch, adopt a beginner’s mind. Zen mind, beginner’s mind. You have to unlearn before you can learn.
I’m not writing this as someone who’s mastered it. I’m not a professional at this, and I’m not claiming to be great at it. I’m just less bad at it than I used to be, because that’s genuinely all any of us are working toward.
Own your mind, or rent it
There’s a difference between someone who owns their mind and someone who rents it. The owner controls their thoughts, which means controlling their reality. They think clearly, articulate clearly, debate clearly, and have daily habits that prove it. The renter borrows their mind. They never think hard, question, reflect, or journal. Life goes stagnant. They blame the world when everything depends on them, and they’re swayed by whoever spoke to them last.
Knowledge doesn’t stick unless you retrieve it, unless it has relevance, unless you put it toward something. This is why creators learn more than passive consumers: give yourself a topic and you give knowledge a reason to be remembered. You’re learning and producing at once. A passive consumer is just a collector, not a synthesizer: saving, liking, never returning. It feels productive. It’s a self-help trap.
The line with AI
This is where AI becomes dangerous, not because AI is bad, but because it replaces the exact thing that changes you.
Delegating your thinking to AI is like paying somebody else to have sex for you. It seems convenient to have it summarize everything. But you won’t have any ideas of your own to create from. Your taste deteriorates because you’ve stopped exposing yourself to anything unique. The struggle to articulate something from scratch is how you become someone who understands it. Skip the struggle, and you get the output without becoming the person who could have produced it.
There is a line. Use AI as a thinking partner (ask it questions, debate it, let it provoke you) and it sharpens you. Use it as a thinking replacement, and it atrophies you. Never let it conclude the answer. Let it help you arrive there.
If someone reads this and immediately asks ChatGPT to summarize it “so they got the main points,” they’ll forget it by tomorrow, same as short-form content. Insightful for thirty seconds. Doesn’t survive the night. No wonder we remember the book that changed our life but not the video from last night.
The four things to actually do
Forget every framework I just gave you. Here’s the whole system, stripped down to what you do on Monday morning:
Retrieve within five minutes, every time. Close the source. Set a timer. Explain the core idea out loud, no notes. Write down exactly where you got stuck.
Go narrower, not faster. Pick one book, one video, one skill. Finish it and retrieve it before you start the next one. Enzo proved this works. Suresh proved the opposite.
Let it fade before you touch it again. Review the gap you wrote down the next day. Review it again a week later. If you can explain it cold both times, you’re done with it. Move on.
Pick a fight with what you read. Explain it to a person, or to AI, and let them push back. Never let AI, or anyone, hand you the conclusion. You’re not done until you can defend the idea, not just repeat it.
That’s it. Not ten steps, not a system, not an app. Four things, repeated until they’re automatic.
Six months from now
Picture two people at a dinner party. It’s 8 p.m. Someone asks, “What are you reading?”
The first read fifty books last year. He can’t remember the title, the author, just the color of the cover. He gets embarrassed, looks around, and sees how people have pity on him. He realizes he was treating books like a number, skimming and moving on.
The second read ten books and retrieved every one. He explains the key takeaways instantly, as if he’d read it that morning. He understood. He never memorized. It was never about quantity.
Six months of daily retrieval practice doesn’t just change what you know. It changes who you are. You stop fearing questions, because you know you can reconstruct the answer. Your words flow. You can hold a counterargument. You walk into conversations dangerous. You built your own mind.
Stop racing other people. There will always be someone learning faster than you. Your only competition is who you were yesterday. Everything is a learnable skill, and learning how to learn is the meta-skill that unlocks every other one.
Epictetus said it to a student who wouldn’t stop bragging about how many scrolls of Chrysippus he’d read:
“Do not tell me that you have read books. Show me that through them you have become a better person.”
Knowledge was never about being the person who reads a thousand books and says “look at me.” It would be more impressive to read less and understand more. Quality has always beaten quantity.
Stop optimizing for memorization. Start understanding. Sit through it. Think through it.

I especially liked your last point about challenging what you read. We should defend the idea ourselves instead of just handing the conclusion to AI.
